Tip #1
Stay calm. What you think may be a transmission problem might not
be one at all. Some tune-up problems and other driveline issues
can be mistaken for transmission problems.
Tip
#2
If you think you have a transmission problem, give us a call. We
can schedule you for a free road test. From the road test, we may
be able to tell you if, in fact, it is a transmission problem or
not. This is the first step toward getting whatever problem you
have resolved.
Tip
#3
Be careful of someone diagnosing your problem over the phone. If
a qualified technician has not had an opportunity to check out your
problem, they are just GUESSING. You need honest and accurate information
to make your decisions. At A1 Transmission, we don't like to guess
(see tip #2).
Questions
Q: What should I do if my car doesn't move?
A: First check the transmission fluid level. Look in the owner's
manual for the proper procedure. Remember there are other things
that can cause the vehicle not to move such as brakes, axle problems,
linkages, etc. If the level is low, you have a leak. That's the
first problem. Low fluid can cause all kinds of problems. See tip#2.
If the level is ok, we can arrange to have your car towed in. Just
call.
Q:
What if the fluid smells burned and looks bad?
A: All transmission fluid has an odor. It's not that pleasant when
its new. Transmission fluid has a red dye in it so you can tell
it from other types of fluids. New fluid gets old and smells worse.
The dye breaks down and changes color. Only a qualified transmission
technician can condemn a transmission on fluid odor and color.
Q:
What can I do to take care of my transmission?
A: Regular maintenance is the key. We recommend every 15,000 to
20,000 miles. This will keep the fluid fresh and that's what you
want. Good maintenance includes removing the transmission pan, inspecting
whatever wear and tear is in the pan, changing the filter and installing
the correct fluid. WARNING...some shops only "flush" your
transmission which may not include the above procedure. Would you
change your engine oil and not the filter? I didn't think so.
